Œuvres de la collection

June 21 - August 18, 2012
Opening: June 21, 2012 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Battat Contemporary is pleased to announce our summer exhibition A chair, a table, a sculpture: Works from the Battat Collection featuring works by Barry Alikas, Mathieu Gaudet, Joe Lima, William Kentridge, Peter Blake, Alfred Pellan, Thomassie Echalook and Chris Ofili.

Moving away from the standard gallery exhibition, A chair, a table, a sculpture is an attempt to look not just at the Battat Collection but at the Battat’s as collectors themselves, an attempt to personalize the collection in a way that shows both how the work is lived with and how the work they collect is influenced by other aspects of their lives.

The works in this exhibition were chosen partly to show the breadth of the collection but also to create a different atmosphere within the gallery. It is a cabinet of curiousities of sorts, an attempt to break down the barrier created by the often cool and removed nature of the white cube. Domestic items such as tables and chairs, research and reading material in the form of a small library and a small collection of toys (in reference to Mr. Battat’s toy company) are installed alongside the works of art to create an environment that allows the viewer to look, relax and play.
