call it a good marriage

March 15 - April 23, 2011
Opening: March 15, 2011 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The newest exhibition at Battat Contemporary, call it a good marriage, takes a look at three New York based artists: photographer Talia Chetrit, sculptor Nick van Woert and draftsman Shawn Kuruneru. What originally drew me to the work of these three artists was a certain ability to challenge the fundamentals of their chosen mediums. There is a certain fascination with materiality, a respect for the history of their craft evident in each of their practices. They each have the ability to take processes that are, in some instances, centuries old and flip, twist, erase or disassemble them. Making something different: something that is simultaneously historical and contemporary. These artists re-frame the contemporary position of sculpture, drawing and photography through radical shifts in the most basic elements of these mediums.
