Tomer GaniharInto The Light - New work from Israel
November 04
- December 18, 2010
Opening: November 4, 2010 6:00 PM
Battat Contemporary is pleased to present the work of renowned Israeli photgrapher Tomer Ganihar. Born in Tel Aviv 1970, Ganihar is a self-taught artist. He was introduced to photography during his service time with the Israeli Army. His oeuvre is wide-ranging. Whether it is through mundane images of tourists, the frenetic energy of late-night raves, or the shocking realities of a hospital’s emergency room, Tomer attempts to capture life in all its various lights. For his inaugural exhibition in Montreal, entitled Into the Light-New Work from Israel, Tomer will present a new body of work comprised of abstract color photographs reminiscent of Color Field paintings from the 1940’s and 50’s. Completely unaltered by digital processes, this body of work is a further exploration of the organic possibilities of Ganihar’s chosen medium. In conjunction with this exhibition Battat Contemporary is publishing a 48 page color catalog, with an accompanying essay by writer Sylvain Campeau, highlighting this new body of work. Currently residing between Tel-Aviv and New York, Tomer has exhibited his work throughout the world including the 2007 Venice Biennale’s International Pavillion which was curated by Robert Storr. Tomer’s solo projects include exhibitions with GL STRAND (Coppenhagen), the Helsinki City Art Museum, the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. His films have been shown at the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Britain International Film Festival. He is a recipient of the Yehoshua Rabinovitz Foundation Writing Grant and a President’s Residence Prize for Young Artists (Israel). For his first show in Montreal, Battat Contemporary will be presenting a new body of Ganihar’s work.
