John AnchetaTopographies

April 18 - May 25, 2013
Opening: April 18, 2013 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Battat Contemporary is pleased to present its third solo project with artist John Ancheta. In his upcoming exhibition, Topographies, John Ancheta surveys elements of American contemporary culture and history in a mise en scène of social outsiders, outlaws and urban decay. In reference to a recent trip the artist took across the United States, this recent body of work was built with references to corrupted digital media and in chiaroscuro of dense impasto. His new paintings fabricate a discordant and fetishistic expression of cultural transgression. John Ancheta contrasts an anxious, conflicted gestural manner, with a plotted aesthetic of glitch – and through a process of parceling out the image, creates an ominous visual space of malaise and disassociation brought on by sensorial overload. Working with screenshots from lo-fi streaming video, Photoshop-collage, and a range of painterly vocabulary, Ancheta devises a precarious juxtaposition of voyeurism and dysphoria.
