Abstraction-representation, figure-ground, image-object. Through a playful and clever vocabulary of forms, color and brushwork, Beth Stuart’s paintings lure the viewer into a world that straddles our normal ideas of these classic issues inherent to the medium of painting. It is a conscious search, not necessarily for the simple push and pull of duality, but more the often over-looked space that is simply in-between. Following this logic, Stuart talks about the paintings for two sticks in a shed “as circling around the sensation of joinings; clasped palms, cigarettes cupped between the lips, fabric bunched in a crevice”. Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Beth Stuart is a graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. She has exhibited her work in numerous exhibitions including solo projects at BOARD OF DIRECTORS, Toronto and the MacDonald Stewart Arts Centre, Guelph as well as group exhibitions at Georgia Sherman Projects, Toronto and Galerie Simon Blais, Montreal. She lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.
