Marion Wagschal's paintings invite contemplation

A woman straddles a man in an easy chair. They are naked, in the throes of passion, the woman's face pressed into the man's chest, his clenched hands digging into her back. But his eyes are looking into the distance - is that detail significant? This is the scene in one of Marion Wagschal's paintings in her new show at Battat Contemporary, and it is typical of her work in that small details, like the man's wayward gaze, turn a seemingly straightforward depiction of lovers into a mystery in which no narrative is imposed. What viewers get are beautifully painted figures that invite contemplation and interpretation. (...)

Peintre figurative montréalaise, Marion Wagschal peint les corps humains dans leur plus grande banalité, dans leur réalité anodine avec une force évocatrice qui transforme ses personnages en héros et ses tableaux en pages d'histoire. On quitte réjoui et impressionné cette exposition où la beauté émerge totalement, complètement de l'ordinaire humain et du quotidien, des relations entre les êtres, de leurs souffrances, de leur sexualité, de leurs errements.

Portraits et scènes d'intérieur constituent encore les fondements de la peinture de Marion Wagschal, à qui la galerie Battat Contemporary consacre une exposition. Ils sont des sujets de prédilection pour cette artiste, qui a commencé dans les années 1970 une carrière relativement discrète, mais ponctuée de succès, notamment par sa contribution à un art dit féministe. L'exposition actuelle aspire à dresser un bilan tout en faisant découvrir un corpus somme toute peu vu.
